Why We Joined Truecaller: Doubling Down on Safety

On September 10, 2026, text+ was officially acquired by Truecaller. I want to share why we chose to join them and what it means for the people who use our service.

I remember when a ringing phone was something to look forward to. Usually, it meant a friend or someone you wanted to hear from. Today, an unfamiliar number makes most of us hesitate. Even a familiar name can leave us wondering whether a call or message is real.

That loss of trust makes me sad. In a world where so many people already feel disconnected, we need more reasons to talk to each other.

We launched text+ in 2009 to make it easier and more affordable for people to stay connected. For many years, spam prevention was a relatively small part of our work. Over the last several years, that has changed dramatically across the communications industry. Whether you run a messaging app or a wireless network, fighting spam and scammers is now a core responsibility. At text+, it’s a major focus of our engineering team.

We have always taken that responsibility seriously. We have zero tolerance for people using our platform to scam others. But as scammers’ methods become more sophisticated, and AI gives them new tools, we knew we needed more help.

That was one of the reasons we approached Truecaller and ultimately chose to become part of the company.

Truecaller has spent years helping people identify callers and avoid spam and scams. In India and many other countries, it is a familiar part of how people decide whether to answer the phone. Its caller identification and spam protection tools serve hundreds of millions of people around the world.

Joining Truecaller gives us more technology, experience, and expertise to put behind a responsibility we have always accepted. We’re doubling down on safety and protection.

That work is already underway. We’re incorporating Truecaller’s caller ID technology into text+ to help our users better understand who is calling. We’ll also draw on their expertise to strengthen how we identify and stop spam and scam activity originating on our platform. Our responsibility includes both protecting our users and preventing our service from being used to harm others.

For a useful example of the work Truecaller does, take a look at Truecaller’s new Scam Checker. It’s a free tool that lets you check suspicious phone numbers and links, or describe a possible scam and find related reports from other people. You don’t need a Truecaller account to use it.

We’ll share more as our work together reaches text+ users. The intent is straightforward: make text+ a safer place to connect and help rebuild confidence in the calls and messages people receive.

Telecom only works when people can trust it. We’ve spent the years since 2009 helping people stay connected. Joining Truecaller is how we intend to make those connections safer.

Watch this space.
